Air Sampling & Asbestos Abatement

This project involved personal and area air sampling, asbestos abatement monitoring, and development of engineering controls inside a large aluminum recycling facility. Scrap materials containing aluminum are mechanically separated inside the facility before the metal is melted and reconstituted into useable products.

Description

CES was part of a consultant team enlisted on an emergency basis in response to a discovery by the owner's insurance carrier that the dust being generated inside the facility was contaminated with asbestos fibers. Over 20 tons of dust was collected and removed from the facility during a 3-week period. CES and two subcontractors collected bulk material samples, coordinated laboratory analysis of the samples, and conducted both personal and area air monitoring 24 hours per day and 7 days per week during the abatement process.

CES reviewed and documented facility procedures, catalogued abatement, sampling and monitoring activities, prepared reports to plant management, and assisted in the development of recommendations for the installation of engineering controls on the facility’s raw material separation equipment.
